What is a Spoon Bracelet?
04/12/2008

A spoon bracelet is a bracelet made from the handles of two teaspoons. On occasion a fork handle can be used but the use of a fork handle does not make the bracelet a fork bracelet. A fork bracelet is made from the tine end of the fork or the whole fork. The composition can be sterling silver, silverplate or stainless steel. Sometimes they are made from other metals. The handles are cut from the teaspoons and formed to fit the wrist. Holes are then drilled for assembly. A single jump ring connects the bracelet at the top and jump/split rings and a clasp are used to finish the bracelet. This is a pretty simple description but for those who are new to this type of jewelry it should answer some questions.

Keep in mind, there are many people and companies producing spoon bracelets. The quality of what is available on the market covers a wide range, from high quality authentic spoon jewelry to low quality fakes. The topic of real and imitation spoon jewelry is always at the forefront of conversations about spoon bracelets and spoon jewelry. If a spoon bracelet is not made from flatware handles then it is NOT a spoon bracelet, or spoon jewelry. Copying a flatware pattern to make jewelry does not make a bracelet a spoon bracelet; the same way cutting a quartz crystal to a diamond shape doesn’t make it a diamond. Mass producing copies of original spoon jewelry contradicts the founding concepts behind spoon jewelry, which was to reuse flatware to create beautiful jewelry! The topic of authentic spoon jewelry versus fake spoon jewelry is discussed in other posts.

Back to spoon bracelets. The spoon bracelet was first introduced in the 1970’s; it was preceded by the spoon ring in the late 60’s. I have heard reports of spoon jewelry being around earlier but most stories point to the late 60's and early 70’s as the first big fad. The original designer of the spoon bracelet, as with other spoon jewelry, is difficult to track. Many people were creating and designing spoon jewelry in the 70’s and due to the informal culture of the times, the original creator of any one design is difficult to name.
Spoon bracelets remain a main staple in the spoon jewelry genre. Beads and charms have been added to give a more personal touch but the basic design has remained the same.
