Some jewelry for sale today does not meet the criteria to be classified as spoon jewelry. It is not made from flatware; it is only based on the patterns of flatware.
Spoon jewelry by definition is a piece of jewelry made from flatware, mainly spoons and forks. Spoon jewelry is popular, in part, due to its environmentally friendly nature. The environmental impact of a piece of spoon jewelry is much less than a piece of jewelry manufactured to look like a piece of spoon jewelry. It’s pretty simple. Take a fork or spoon and work it into a piece of jewelry. This process has very little strain on the surrounding world.
Jewelry that is only based on flatware patterns does not utilize, reuse or repurpose already existing flatware. In fact, it only utilizes flatware in copying its shape and pattern.
When examining a piece of jewelry that claims to be spoon jewelry look for the original flatware company mark. Pieces that lack a flatware company mark (or remnant of one) should be looked at with skepticism; it is most likely not made from flatware.
For some the attraction of spoon jewelry is to have something from the past. It might be for sentimental reasons or just the love of things that have a history. Many times jewelry posing as spoon jewelry will have the look and feel of real spoon jewelry but lacks the pedigree. In other words the piece was never flatware.
